Impressionisms is an graphical notation typography project. Graphic notation is the representation of music through the use of visual symbols outside the realm of traditional music notation. To create this poster/animation series I first listened to songs from the impressionism era of classical piano music. I listened to these songs many times over: Nocturnes no 7 by Poulenc, Miroirs Une Barque Sur L’Ocean by Ravel, and Pagodes Estampes by Debusssy. I then turned what I was hearing into abstracted graphical notation animations also including standard notation and color. I made the animation frames into posters and RISO printed those, rescanning them to create RISO animations.

This series was featured in the March 2025 Paradiso Riso Rama exhibition at Texas State University Flex Space Gallery in San Marcos, Texas.
